The bottom fell out for USC
engineers on Saturday, April 8.

Clemson's Y Beach, the USC-built
craft took on water, and literally,
the bottom separated from the rest
of the boat.
"I guess we waited too long to
cure the boat properly," Bill Train,
past president of USC's American
Society of Civil Engineers said.
TRAIN SAID the ASCE sponsored
races, held annually to test
design possibilities and 'have a lot
of fun," weren't a total loss for
USC. The university did win an
attendance award.
But, the day was pretty much of

a washout, Train admitted. "We
put on a poor show. When our entry
had the bottom fall out, it kind of
let the air out of our tires. In fact,
we decided that everybody that

couldn't work next year."
Only 10 of 22 invited schools .
showed up, Train said, adding that
"everybody enjoyed it, though, and
there must have been at least 1,000
people turn out for the races."
HOST CLEMSON WON both first
and second places in the overall
standings, and UNC-Charlotte took
third, Train said. Clemson's first
place boat was the longest there,
about 20 feet, he added.
The USC team floundered early,

Train said. The USC swimmers
