meeting Friday, does not see such
a conflict. "My job has nothing to
do with this situation," he said.
"Both men have to answer to me.
Under the Carolina plan, there
needs to be one person for the
coaches to report to."
"I feel my main concern at the
present time is spring practice,"
Carlen said. "I don't think I should
make any comments on the subject."
BOTH SIDES of the dispute
however, are enthusiastic that a
solution can be reached soon, Gray
said.
According to Morris, the problem
in reorganizing USC's athletic
program can and will be worked
out internally. "I believe we are
very close to a solution," he said
"The need for legal action can be
avoided."
Gray said Holderman also
believes a solution to the problem
is near. "Once we get this
situation settled," Gray said, "we
can go on with our program as if
nothing had even happened."
CARLEN'S CONTRACT, which
was signed before Holderman's
arrival at USC, has been the center
of the controversy. According to
reports from a local Columbia
newspaper, tne contract was
renegotiated when Holderman took
office.

"That is not true," said Gray.
"The five-year contract Carlen
signed when he first got here was
re-negotiated by president Patterson
in 1976." On November 12,
1977, Holderman granted Carlen an
extension, adding another year to
the four years he had left on his
contract.
