Working students budget time, money By ALY COVELL Gamecock Staff Writer She sits quietly in her Gamecock jersey, blue jeans and blue bandana, taking a short rest from a schedule she describes as "pressured." Kate Hagman, who works in the Gamecock Snack Bar 15 to 20 hours a week in addition to attending classes full-time, is one of more than 2,500 working students. She said she thought she might be able to take 18 credit hours instead of her current 15, but "I don't know if I'd be sane by the end of the semester." Joe Keegan, a security guard for Wade Hampton dorm, said his 16 hour-a-week job does not pay enough and he needs to work to pay for school expenses. SUSAN JAMESON, a full-time student who works 10 to 15 hours a week as an usher at the Russell House Theatre needs to pay for "food, books and other necessary living expenses." Another working student said his job at the records department does not pay sufficiently because the salary is below minimum wage, but the job does offer experience that he said he thought would be helpful for his career goals. The job "has given me good experience working in an office" with people in different situations, he said. Other off-campus jobs which might be helpful to his major would be too time-consuming, he said. A student who works at the state house said she thought her job offers her "good experience because I like politics. It's like an internship to me." She said 15 hours was a "good amount" to take while working. "You have to learn how to budget your time" and get your priorities straight, she said.
