"I'M REALLY excited about
winning," said Lucas, who has only

but it has paid off."
Capp finished ahead of David
Nichols, who was last year's

Carolina contest. Placing third in
the open division was Lucas.
The 20-year-old Capp was named
best less and back in his division.
Nichols was voted best arms while
Lucas was given best chest, abdomen
and most muscular.
"It's fantastic," said the open
division winner. "I found out about
the contest late, and I'm glad I
could enter. This is a good tone-up
for the Mr. South Carolina contest
next weekend.'*
The contestants from both
divisions were judged in individual
and group poses.
Lucas said this contest was a
stepping stone toward the Mr.
Teenage America contest in
August. He will compete next
weekend for the title of Mr. South

It seems Carolina has been left out in the cold. The ACC has grown
weary of waiting for Carolina to get its athletic situation in order. And
the ACC knows that since Jim Carlen, the athletic director here at
Carolina, is opposed to conference affiliation it would be foolish to
keep waiting when the right university, Georgia Tech, is more than
eager to make the ACC an eight team conference once again.
T1IE ACC wants Georgia Tech for two very important reasons. The
biggest reason is the Yellow Jackets are situated in Atlanta, the '
largest city in the southeast Also with the Yellow Jackets in the

One thing has definitely been learned from the admission of
Georgia Tech to the ACC; the ACC is not going to sit around
and wait for USC to get back in the conference.
It is sad in one way because not too long ago Carolina was considering
possible reaffiliation with the ACC. *nie vote on the board was
8-5 not to seek admission.
THIS WAS the signal to the ACC. Since Carolina's Board of
Trustetes did not want to get back, the ACC looked elsewhere for the
eighth team to fill out the conference. From 1971, when Carolina withdrew,
up until the board's vote in 1976 the ACC left open the door for
. Carolina to get back in the conference. After seeing the writing on the
wall the ACC looked elsewhere. Hie end result is ACC affiliation for
Georgia Tech while Carolina stubbornly remains an independent in a
land of conference-oriented schools.
