Tenure, which provides job
security for faculty members, is
based on departmental rank and a
probationary period of four to six
years.

removed through extraordinary
measures taken by the university's
president.
The tenure process begins at the
departmental or college level with
the department head notifying the
eligible professors that they are to
be considered.
Eligibility is determined initially
on years of service at USC. An
associate professor or full
professor is automatically granted
tenure after four years experience
with the university. The
probationary period for assistant
professors is six years, while instructors,
lecturers and other
faculty of a temporary nature are
not eligible.

to the college dean. Each college
has the option of setting its own
standards for tenure, as long as
those standards are approved by
the committee on tenure and
promotions.
Following recommendation, the
dean will forward the files to the
provost council, currently com- i
prised of provost Keith Davis,
assistant provost for academic
affairs William Wesson and dean of
a ffairs William Wesson and dean
of the Graduate School, George
Reeves.

university committee, made up of
24 professors with tenure. This
committee has 15 members elected
by the faculty and nine presidential
appointees.
THE COMMITTEE does not
always return the same decision as
the provost council, although "that
council's recommendation is
significant," committee chairman
Dr. Donald Greiner said.
(JSC President James B.
Holderman has the next vote on
tenure, although last year he
agreed with the university committee's
decision on 94 percent of
the cases, Greiner said. "The
president must, however, have
some discretion since he has the
broadest view of the university,"
Greiner said. The board of trustees
has a nominal decision by casting
the final vote, but almost always
they will approve the president's
tenure recommendations, he
added.
