The USC golf team captured fifth
place in the ninth annual Furman
Invitational Tournament this
weekend in Greenville.
The tournament was scheduled
for 54 holes, but heavy rains forced
cancellation of the final round.
Clemson won the team championship
while Alabama's Gary
Trivisonno claimed the rainshortened
event's top individual
honors.
The Gamecock's Darrell Welker
finished the tourney in a tie for
third place in the individual
competition. Welker, a former
junior College Ail-American,
carded rounds of 78-71 for a two
day total of 149.
"I WAS a little disappointed
after shooting a 78 on the first day,
but I was very pleased with my 71
on Friday. I feel like I could have
shot even better on Friday if I
hadn't missed a birdie putt on the
17th hole," said Welker.
Welker, in his first year at USC
after transferring from Brevard
Junior Community College,
combined a par 36 on the front nine
with a one under par 35 on a difficult
back side for an excellent
sub-par round of 71 on Friday.
Finishing in fourth place at
Furman was Welker's roommate,
Mike Holland. The former South

THE FURMAN INVITATIONAL
was held on the Furman University
Golf Course which is characterized
by its difficult final nine holes. The
difficulty of the back side at
Furman is a result of two long par
four holes and two deceiving par
threes.
The Gamecocks next tournament
will be the South Carolina
Intercollegiate at Hampton April 58.
Following that event, the
Gamecocks will participate in the
