Senator Pii Bv DANNY POWF.M. Gamecock Staff Writer A movement to oust senator John Pincelli, chairman of the senate finance committee, failed by a 10 to 11 vote in the second-tolast meeting of the current student government. The resolution added that the chairman of the finance committee (John Pincelli) should be immediately removed and replaced by a competent member of the finance committee. A lengthy debate between opposing factions in the senate ensued. AT ONE POINT, senate president Joe Drawdy called for a five-minute recess. NORRIS, who is also a member of the finance committee, brought applause for his statement from the senate floor. Norris later said that it would not benefit him to lay judgment on Pincelli, because he would soon be presiding over the senate. SENATOR MARK SWEETMAN called the proposal "a bit of viciousness." "This is the end of the semester; Tuesday (March 21) is our last meeting, for those of us who chose not to run to show up next year. And for that reason, I see very, very little point in attempting to do anything at this stage of the game to any member of this austere body." Senator Lester Bates, one of the key debaters, staunchly defended Pincelli. Loftis said Bates was an early supporter of the resolution, which had been "floating around for a few weeks," according to a senate source. "I never supported the resolution," Bates said, "and any statement that says otherwise is absolutely false. 1 did not learn about the thing until Monday night (March 13)." Scalera's vote proved decisive, and he commented, "I had heard that John Pincelli had started a write-in campaign against me in the election (for a senate seat), and Chanelo's Piiz Ms i'SBB HHS* FAST FREE 254 CHA 2702 R< Br*a4 ? Pincelli is a bad chairman, but he is no worse than other chairmen. When I realized that I was doing it for a personal reason, I changed my mind and my vote," Scalera said. Pincelli speaking in rebuttal to the charges of irresponsibility within the finance committee, said, "The situation has existed since September when I was appointed, and I think we were semi-efficient and still are.
