"I understand why the Israelis
have retaliated. They feel that it is
necessary to take the retaliatory
action to prevent succeeding raids.
Both actions have been injurious in
trying to keep the momentum
going for a secure peace between
Israel on the one hand and Egypt
on the other and potentially Israel
with both Jordan and Syria."
FORD RECOGNIZED several
problems in Carter's economic
policy and he cited differences in
inflation figures between his administration
and the current administration.
"Unfortunately, since January
20, 1977, to the present time, the
rate of inflation under President
Carter has gone up on an annual
basis from 4.8 percent when I was
president to 6.8 percent at the
present time."
Ford views the purchasing of
German marks by the U.S. as a
"temporary thing." He said the

"It's only a bandaid on the
serious problem. Once they (the
Carter administration) get through
buying the dollars or whatever
they do in the monetary markets
around the world, if they haven't
gone to the root of the problem, the
cause of the difficulty, it'll just be a
temporary palliative, a bandaid."

Friday evening Ford was the
featured guest sneaker at a
banquet celebrating the end of Law
Day, which recognizes outstanding
students and professors in the USC
Law School. On Saturday Ford
was featured speaker at the
'"Evening of Champions," a roast
held in honor of USC head football
coach,Jim Carlen.
Of particular interest at almost
all the functions Ford attended was
his possible candidacy for the
presidential race in 1980. He would
not write his "obituary" as he
termed it.
