shape begins to take form carefully
honed by the experienced artisan.
Suddenly the form reached perfection
and needs no more work.
For the bodybuilder this perfection
must come every time he
wishes to compete. His body must
be in perfect proportion, his
muscles must be toned just right,
and his attitude must be thinking
nothing but victory.
After months and months of
vigorous daily training and
working out. the bodv huiiHpr
finally reaches that stage where he
is ready to compete and show off
his muscular body to judges, other
bodybuilders and often screaming
fans.
TO HIM it is an art; an art where
only his actions and dedication
towards one goal matter. He is the
artist, yet he is also the art, and
must guide every aspect of his life
towards attaining a bodybuilding
championship.
The USC bodybuildingweightlifting
club will provide the
forum, April 2, with which the
bodybuilder can attain this goal
when they present Mr. USC
bodybuilding tournament.
Although'^the tournament will
also include power weightlifting
and arm wrestling in center stage
will be the body men of USC.
Seven men from Carolina will
compete in the bodybuilding
category, while 12 will participate
in weightlifting.

Richar d son , who began the club

of the sport can be seen in the rapid
growth of the club.
"We began the club in December
with 20 members," he said.

THE BODYBUILDER, in order
to prepare for the event has to,
according to Richardson, workout
six days per week for more than
two and a half hours per day.
The routine includes
weightlifting for chest, back and
shoulders on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday. On Tuesday, Thursday

concentrates on his legs and arms.
"The body builder must be
careful when he lifts," Richardson
said. "If he concentrates on one
part of his body for too long, he
won't be proportioned right and
won't look good for the contest."
By working on repetitions of
bench press, pullovers, squats and
arm curls, the body builder
develops a condition known as a
pump, the rapid flow of blood inside
of the muscle inflating the arm
or leg.
THIS CONDITION is ideal for
the body builder as it enlarges the
size of his muscles greatly. The
body builder works for this before
the contest.

weight.
4'The body builder must lose
weight so that each muscle stands
out without any fat," Richardson
said. "It's a slow process which
takes a long time for any results to
show."
In the body contest which will be
held in the Russell House Ballroom
the body builders must go through
a specified routine. First the
contestant must stand still so that

THE JUDGES of the contest
judge the body by its muscle tone

proportionality, and on his total
muscularity.
The winner of the contest will be

PROVENCE, who is also a
member of the Carolina football
team, is the club's vice-president.
After the opening competition in

on to the arm wrestling tournament,
then to the body builders.
