Carolina rebounded - from a
disappointing 6-3 loss to North
Carolina Wednesday witty a pair of
triumphs over Southeastern
Conference opponents this past
weekend. Alabama and Kentucky
fell to the Gamecocks by respective
scores of 6-3 and 7-2 on Friday
and Saturday at the Maxcy-Gregg
Courts.
Friday the Gamecocks used a
quick start to gain an advantage in
singles competition. After gaining
the upper hand the Gamecocks
proceeded to take two of three
doubles .matches bo hand the
defeat to the 14th-ranked Crimson
Tide.
USC took singles wins at
positions one, four, five and six
with Chris Mayotte, Barry Gilbert,
Arthur Anastopoulo and Jeff Hull
providing the victories.
IN DOUBLES competition the
USC teams of MayotteAnastopoulo
and Chuck HodginJeff
Hull won their matches in
straight sets to provide the final
margin of victory. The Gamecocks
improved their record to 13-1 and
showed something important to
their coach Ron Smarr.
"I was afraid the players might
get discouraged after losing to
North Carolina earlier in the week,
but they bounced back real well
against a solid team. If we hadn't
recovered mentally we would have
been blown away today," Smarr
said. "We lost our matches against
UNC's top three singles players
and Alabama's top three players
are better than UNC's, so you can
see what might have happened
today. Just about everybody
played better than they did on
Wednesday."
