Alpha Phi Alpha (APA), which
shares the top ranking in this
week's intramural basketball poll,
scored the first 14 points of the
second half to break open a close
game ana coasi to a 54-41 victory
Tuesday over sixth rated archrival
Omega Psi Phi at the P.E.
Center.
The fast breaking Alphas held
Omega Psi Phi (Ques) scoreless
through the first six and a half
minutes of the final period until
Mike Vick scored to break the
drought.
"They were pretty slow getting
back on defense," said APA's
Aaron Hightower, who contributed
13 points to the victory. "We beat
them up and down the floor, and
there was nothing that they could
do to stop us."

The USC women's tennis team
swept over Furman 9-0 Tuesday
afternoon at the Maxcy-Gregg

Highlighting the overwhelming
victory for the Gamecocks was the
return of number one player Laura
Martin. Out with a wrist injury for
the first five matches of the season,
Martin easily beat Furman's
Kathy Moore 6-1, 6-1.
"Having Laura back in the

"We played well together as a
team tonight,"APA coach Vennie
Gore said. "We're finally beginning

playoffs."
Leading the Alphas in scoring

we naa a poor offensive
showing," Omega Psi Phi coach
Jerome Devlin said. "Our defense
was pretty good, but when you
don't score but 41 points, you can't
expect to win."
Cold shooting by both teams
marred the first period as neither
team scored through the first five
minutes of the game. The 7-0
Alphas heated up to claim a 24-21
halftime advantage over the Ques,
who saw their record drop to 6-2,
setting up the second half surge
that put the game out of reach.
"I'm looking to win the championship
this year," said
Hightower. "Last year we made it
to the finals against KA and lost. I
don't think it will haDDen acrain "
Omega Psi Phi is also looking
forward to the upcoming playoffs.
"Tonight was no indication of how
we'll do," Devlin said. "Everyone
said that we were the question
mark team because we lost so
many players, but I think we can
come together and make a good
showing in the playoffs."
. While everyone else was looking
ahead to the playoffs, APA coach
Gore was still thinking about his
team's impressive win. "We were
really prepared for this game," he
said. "We practiced hard for them.
The Ques are our traditional rivals.
We just wanted it more."

the Paladins. Wheeler and Malool
had the toughest time, beating the
team of Moore and Cox 6-3, 7-5.
Cooper and Martin disposed of
Sheehan and Abby Kennedy 6-2, 61,
