Renoir Films
to be shown
The Russell House University
Union's Cinematic Arts Committee
will present a Jean Renoir
Retrospective in the Russell House
Theatre on three consecutive
Sundays, beginning February 19.
Renoir, younger son of painter
Auguste Renoir, is widely considered
the greatest living filmmaker.
Certainly he is the dean of
rrencn directors, and during
World War II established himslef
in American film as well. In 1976,
Renoir received a special Oscar for
his contribution to the progress of
motion pictures. I
The Retrospective will sample
each period in Renoir's 45-year
career, beginning on the 19th with
a silent short, "The Little Match
Girl" (France, 1928), and "The
Golden Coach" (Italy, 1954 in
English). Each will be shown ~
twice, at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
"The Southerner" (U.S., 1945),
starring Zachary Scott, and "The
River" (India, 1951) make up the
all-English language program
February 26. Complete shows
begin at 6 and 9:30 p.m.
The festival closes March 5 with
two French films, each shown
once: "Toni" (1934) at 7:30 p.m.
and "French Cancan" (1955) at
9:30 p.m. Admission to all three
programs is free with IJ.S.C.
identification.
