Dear Editor:
Sport Editor Matt Ward's
selection for Sportsman of the
Year was commendable; however,
his notion was not carried far
enough. Indeed, Pele's contribution
to his sport was not
measured in millions of dollars
won, home runs hit, or tournament

the incredible growth of soccer's
popularity in America in the last
five years.
With all due respect to Pele, we
feel there was an athlete who even
better exemplified a true sportsman.
Webster defines "Sportsman"
as "a person who is fair,
generous, a good loser." Our
choice for 1977's Sportsman of the
Year displayed all these qualities
in the several sports with which he
has been associated. Since being
relieved of a hectic work schedule,
our nominee has had time to
participate actively in such sports
as golf, tennis, swimming, and
snow skiing. Being a former out
standing college football player,
his return to an active sports
career posed no problem. Like
Pele, his participation in the
aforementioned sports aided their
popularity. He helped to advertise
the benefits of swimming as a
recreational exercise; his ap

To the Sports Editor:
I'd like to comment upon the
contagious disease called "Warditis"
(inflammation of the Ward)
which has afflicted the sports
section. I began to notice this
disease tasi year wnen 1 came upon
a by-line which mentioned the
name in question: "By Matt Ward,
Gamecock Staff Writer." At first I
thought nothing of the name or the
article which started the disease.
But suddenly the name began to
spread and before long "Warditis"
found its way into major stories,
and later it even spread into
columns. And as the affliction

brainwashing them into reading
the results of the disease. It was
soon after that the brainwashed
formed a cult and began craving
for more of the mutated articles
that the disease was causing.

hooked of the cultists. Other articles
began pouring out like the
residue of festering blisters, and
soon almost everyone on campus
began believing and devouring
anything Ward said.
At the beginning of this
semester, I thought that maybe the
cause of these articles had been
isolated in New Jersey (everyone
knows how cold kills germs). Well,
people, the real result can be found
in the last issue of The Gamecock
(Jan. 30) where we find that
"Warditis" had not only spared its
prolific words over half of the
sports section, but it had become

Pele ? the sportsman of the
year? Bah . . . What about
Saduharu Oh who broke one of the
most cherished records in sportsdom
? the career homerun
record. Or Reggie Jackson, who
brought the troubled Yankees to
one of the most devastating World
Championship victories in baseball
history? Or Craig Morton's great
comeback? There are so many
great sports people that could
qualify! How can Ward single out
Pele? And everyone is sitting in
their rooms reading the garbage
and saying, "Yea, yea Pele, yea,
vea . .
Ward has taken over the sports
world at USC and his word is like
God to many people. Instead of
"Sportalk" his column should be
named "Sport-if-you-don't-believeme-then-tough."
I demand that Ward cut down on
his writing. Let's get some clear,
accurate, unbiased reporting instead
of his verbose articles!
