Ellen Piernick, a freshman from Huntington, Long [sland, was standing under the ramp located between Fraternity row and the parking garage when she was flit by a car. Steam from USC maintenance equipment was blowing across the lane. "As I got to the comer I noticed the USC main tenance department had some equipment parked to the left of the ramp. They were blowing steam across Blossom Street completely engulfing the westbound lanes," said eyewitness Wayne Mclntyre. ACCORDING TO Mclntyre, the steam completely obstructed his view of the other side of the street just to the left of where Piernick was standing. Mclntyre said she stepped off the curb at about the same time he saw a green car pass into the steam cloud. The car had reduced speed to switch from the left to the right lane, according to Mclntyre. "Traffic was heavy and there was no room," he said. Piernick sustained injuries to her left leg which was later set in a thigh-high cast after X-rays revealed no fractures. "The ambulance arrived about ten minutes after I was hit," Piernick said, "I was awake the whole time." According to Piernick, two maintenance workers were standing on a platform just behind her at the time of the accident. "They were watching the steam blow across the street," she said. "ONE OF the maintenance oeoDle arrived in a university van marked maintenance," Mclntyre said. A crew member told him the driver couldn't see the girl, according to Mclntyre. There were no markers or flagmen at the work site. The maintenance department and the driver of the car could not be reached for comment.
