A recent example of American
technical ingenuity is being
marketed in the form of home
videotape recorders.
Sony Corporation introduced the
first videotape recorders less than
a year ago under the trade name of
"Betamax." A Betamax unit can
record television programs from a
local station if the unit is attached
to an outdoor antenna.
r
TO TAPE a show a timing device
must be set that will turn the unit
on at the desired time. The unit will
record for the duration of the tape,
and the television need not be
turned on to record.

units is their high price. Prices
range from $999 to $1350 on models
by Sony, Motorola and Zenith, the
three largest manufacturers of
videotape systems.
The reason for the high cost of
the systems is labeled "product
obsolescence." The idea behind
product obsolescence is to test the
demand for the product. If the
commodity is desirable, demand
will grow, and increased mass
production will follow, thereby
enabling manufacturers to lower

said Hold^rman. Fiscal restraints
will continue, he added, but the
planning yepr will "afford the
university the opportunity to focus
on long-term capital needs."
As he has done since arriving
last fall, the president continued to
emphasize the branch campuses as
equal parts of a "Greater
University of South Carolina." The
December board meeting was the
first such meeting that
representatives from the eight
regional campuses have been

THE NEW plan outlines
numerous ideas for attracting
more and better students not in the
traditional 18 to 21-year-old range,
including support for a South
Carolina College for honors
students in the Horseshoe and new
programs for adult students.
"We must substantially improve
our endowment to over 50 per cent
alumni participation," Holderman
said. Currently, USC has less than
10 per cent, and the president plans
to strengthen the alumni
association and involve it in more
student recruiting.

Marchant called the plan a "well
thought out and developed plan for
giving direction on a long-term
basis." He said the document is
viable and has long been needed.
"It is a good vehicle for us to

INSTALLATION IS simple. If
the purchaser has some
background in electronics the
operation is simple. If not,
professional installation is advised.
