For the second consecutive year A
The Gamecock sports section will e
rank the top ten men's intramural r
basketball teams every Monday.
Included in the poll will be teams I
from the fraternity, independent, I
and residence divisions. The only \
division that will not be ranked is s
the Gamecock League since the
league is ineligible to win the
campus championship. The top ten
as of Monday are:
(1 ) KAPPA ALPHA
After winning the campus i
championship Kappa Alpha has i
everyone returning from last i
year's team. KA is led by 6-3 center
Frank Pollock. Pollock, last y ear's
most valuable player in intramurals
is one of the league's
best players. His play in the
playoffs, especially against Alpha
Phi Alpha in the finals, is one of the
key reasons why the KAs are
campus champions.
Also returning for Kappa Alpha
will be John McArthur and David
fTcfafann o V\r* fnntinrmoii<Ann
^Okvtuuv Ui iiav tui TfOiu puouiuild.
McArthur is an extremely accurate
long range shooter while
Estefano assists Pollock on the
boards. Handling the ball for
Kappa Alpha will be Lee Richards,
Bryon Kinney and Brant Bahnmuler.
Richards and Kinney
played last year, with Bahnmuler
being the only newcomer on the
starting team.
One thing KA has in great supply
is excellent organization. One man
does not win or lose for Kappa
Alpha. Their teamwork is the main
reason KA is the favorite to defend
their campus championship.
(2) ALPHA PHI ALPHA
Alpha Phi Alpha came within one
some ui winning nit; cttmpus
championship before losing to
Kappa Alpha in the finals in
overtime. Returning to this year's
team will be co-captains Leroy
Buttone and Aaron Hightower.

is this season," co-captain

(3) AFRO
In the number three position is
\FRO. This year's starting five
will consist of Lamelle Anderson
and Nelson Heard at the guards,
while Harry St. John and Henry
Best will play the forward position.
The starting center will be 6-4
sophomore Donzell Leak.
"This year's team does not have
any of the players returning from
last year," head coach Kenny
JacKson saiu. I tnink mat our
main weakness is that we are very
young and are success will depend
on how fast we will mature as a
team."
(4)MAXCY
The surprise team in the top ten
poll is Maxcy. Last year Douglas
won the residence division but the
favorite to win that division this
year is Maxcy. The starting line-up
includes 6-8 center Pat Morbitzer,
and Jeff Archie and Earl Childs at
the guards. A.D. Underwood and
Anthony Counts will play forward.
"We are very surprised and
extremely honored to be included
in the Gamecock preseason poll,"
head coach Jim Pitts said. "I can
only hope we will be representative."

(6) TOWNMEN
The Townmen have been one of
the consistent teams in intramural
basketball. The probable starters
for this year's team will be Ken
Long and Hon Johnson at the
guards. Playing the forward
positions will be J. D. Burke and
Tim Baucon. Either Greg
Hourigan, John Rabon or Stevie
Stephens will play center.
"Our guards are very good ball

coach Ken Roseborough said. "Our
forwards are excellent outside
shooters and they are especially
strong on the boards. The only
possible weakness we may have is
at center."
(7) PI KAPPA PHI
Pi Kappa Phi was ranked in last
year's pre-season poll; however,
they finished with a disappointing
4-4 record. Three Pi Kappa Phi
sianers win return, oieve anearc
will be at center while player coach
Jerry Barber and Robert Lake will
play forward. Handling the ball for
Fi Kappa Phi will be Alan McCandless
and Chuck Wright.
"We have a tall team and hope
that the mixture of veteran s and
rookies will provide the righl
chemistry for a successful
season," Brewer said.

Probable starters for this year's
team will be Bob Flannagan in his
third year with the team and Billy
Fox in his second. Three first year
men will be a big factor to the
success of Newman. David
Freaney, Mark Higgins, and Ray
Curley are all newcomers.
(9> YOUNG DEMOCRATS
Young Democrats will be
competing in basketball this
season and they have the potential
to be a factor in the independent
division. Probable starters will be
