Intelligent life may exist in
other solar systems, but it is
highly unlikely that such life
forms have visited the earth in
the form of unidentified flying
objects (UFO's), according to
jonn Li. i^aiKo, pnysics ana
astronomy professor.
"I remain very skeptical that
interstellar travellers have

"Because of the tremendous
distances involved, such voyages
would take hundreds of years."
Another significant obstacle
would be the amount of fuel
needed fur such a trp, he said.
To even approach the speed of
light, which most scientists
agree is the fastest possible
speed, a technologically impossible
fuel system would be
required, according to Safko.
THE SPEED of radio signals
also hurts the believability of
UFO reports, according to Larry
Ward, a USC graduate student in
coastal research. "It is incomprehensible
to tell just how
long it would take for a radio
signal to reach the next galaxy,"
he said.
Ward said it takes about 15
ininutes for a beam of light to be
sent from Earth to Mars. Kadio
signals traveling at a much
slower speed could not travel the
distance from one end of our

"Scientists have been sending
radio signals in the form of
mathematical equations," Ward
said. "You have to have some
sort of language and
theoretically mathematics is
constant throughout the
universe. 1 ve never neara 01
any responses to these signals. 1
can't explain UFO citings."
BUT SCIENTISTS continue
hoping for an indication that we
are not alone.
"For several years scientists
have been sending radio signals

galaxy but thus far have

planet which is inhabited by

many years before a radio signal

DESPITE SCIENTIFIC
skepticism, the public never
ce~~.es to believe in the
possibility that UFO's are
visitors from another world. The
enormous popularity of the film
"Close Encounters of the Third
Kind" is an expression of the
public's interest in the unexplained.
"The idea that there are
inhabited planets in other solar
systems merely enhances
people's thirst for conclusive
evidence of extra-terrestial
visitors," Safko said. Scientists
estimate there are perhaps 10
million planets in our galaxy
which could support intelligent
life
According to Safko, a number
of UFO reports are hoaxes using
staged photographs or faked
evidence of spaceship landings.
Other sightings may be caused
by certain atmospheric conditions
or sunlight reflecting off
airplanes, he said.
