system in the world and "private
enterprise makes America
strong," Sen. Strom Thurmond, RS.C.,
said Nov. 22 in a speech
before the USC professional

"When a worker has an incentive
to produce he produces more," he
said. "There is a tendency to
disparge profits in America,"
Thurmond said and added,
"however, if you don't make a
profit you're out of business, and
most of the good works in this
country have been done by successful
businessmen."

government is never as thrifty as
private enterprise. "I would urge
all of you to keep a sharp lookout on
Washington."
Thurmond said the popular vote
bill pending in Congress is a
mistake. TTie bill would allow
popular vote to elect a president.
"With this bill, twelve of the
largest states could elect the
president. With the Electoral

Regarding the Labor Reform
Act, Thurmond said "This bill is
nothing but an attempt to unionize
the South." He said that the
government should not take sides
in labor matters.
