Rating a professor's teaching
effectiveness is used in determining
his promotion and tenure in <
some USC programs, said Daniel
J. Antion, Associate Dean of the
I College of Science and
Mathematics.
Student evaluations are
sometimes an "input into administrative
decisions," Antion
said.
Other programs only use the
evaluations to provide the
professor with a useful critique of
his teaching skills.
MANY DIFFERENT types of
evaluation forms are used. The
type of evaluation used depends
upon each academic program or
college. Some programs develop
* their own forms, some forms are
developed by the college and some
do not use forms.
"The college or program which
do not use evaluation forms, feel
that the forms are not useful or

I)R. JOSEPH P. RYAN, an
assistant professor in the College
of Education, is researching
teacher evaluations by questioning
and consulting the Educational
Testing Service.
"Teacher evaluations should
deal with teaching, the physical
facilities, advising and the qualitv
of the programs," Ryan said. "It is
not obligatory that a teacher
evaluation form be used and some
do not use one."

using inept surveys as factors in
determining promotion and tenure
is questionable," he said.
The education department uses a
questionnaire as one of its tenure
and promotion procedures. When
evaluating a professor, the committee
requires the professor to
select a class he has taught. The
committee then randomly selects
ten students from that class and
mails each one a questionnaire
concerning the teacher's effectiveness.
