WHILE BIG brewers are
booming, the smaller operations
seem to be drying up. Falstaff
showed decreases in 16 of 19 states,
while other small brands-Narragansett,
Dixie, Jax, General

similar declines in 77 sales according
to Oppenheimer's. Two
small brands, Rainier and Grain
Belt, were recently bought out by
Heileman, according to Beer

No drugs are used either, Galvin
said. The student's guide is written
by the faculty and graduate
students of the psychology
department.
There are two experiments that
involve deception, Galvin said.
They involve about 30 subjects
each and test long-term memory.
Both last two months with each
student participating for an hour at
a time.
. IN THE experiments, subjects
are given a set of words, then the
experimenter diverts their at
tention. "We don't want them
rehearsing the words," he said.
The subjects are then asked to
repeat the set of words.
"There's nothing against any set
of ethical standards," Galvin said,
"by not telling them full details of
the experiment prior to the
testing."
ALL EXPERIMENTS by the
psychology department meet the
American Psychology Association
requirements for informed consent
by subjects, and that the department
has its own ethics committee
that must agree on all experiments,
said Galvin.
AllV Student mnv withdraw fivwi
an experiment without explanation,
according to the
student's guide.
"WE DON'T require anyone to
do anything they don't want to,"
Galvin said. "The department has
one overriding standard -- that no
subject suffers any harm."
