The endorsement of Charles
"Pug" Ravenel was the
highlight of Friday night's
McGovern rally, but few
Ravenel well-wishers were
there to see the South Carolina
senatorial candidate. They
came to see George McGovern.
Ravenel will run against
Strom Thurmond in 1978.
"I'm pleased to endorse
Ravenel for any office he wants
to run for," Senator McGovern
I said. He laughed and added, "1
just hope my endorsement
won't handicap him in any
way."
Ravenel, a former gubernatorial
candidate, told the
group, "You don't often get a
chance to look people in the eye
and say thank you. Many of you
helped me in 1974, but I'm
looking forward to those of you
who didn't, holnine mp in 107ft "
More than 400 persons attended
the rally, sponsored by the USC
^ Young Democrats.
IN HIS SPEECH Ravenel
stressed the importance of
people learning not to lose their
outrage against injustices.

On the subject of improving
education in the state, a platform
on which he ran in 1974,
Ravenel emphasized the importance
of keeping teachers in
the state. "We lose most of our
teachers to out-of-state
schools," he said.
Rut in spite of Ravenel's wellknown
plans to run for the U.S.
Senate, students swarmed
around George McGovern,
shaking hands and welcoming
the one-time presidential
candidate.
In his speech to the students,
McGovern spoke of the 1972
elections and former President
Richard M. Nixon.
"One of the lessons made
painfully clear is that there are
things that can happen to people
in politics," McGovern said.
"We need a new definition of
winners." About Nixori,
McGovern said, "Not all the
money in the world would make
me want to take the place of
that winner."
