\ Drop-b a By SALLY WILSON Asst. Sports Editor Carolina's quarterbacks should have a few more options this fall when they use the drop-back passing formation instead of rolling out to either side of the field as they did last season. Th^ drop-back pass will allow the quarterback to throw to either side of the field and should improve Carolina's passing, USC offensive coach Jack Fligg said. Quarterbacks Ron Bass and Steve Swinehardt did not play in Friday's annual spring game because of the risk of injury. "IT MAKES the defense defend the whole field instead of really just one side," Fligg said. "We want to get a better passing game. It (drop-back pass) might be more of an advantage." Sophomore quarterbacks Greg Gresham and Jay Feltz played for the Garnet and White, respectively, in Friday night's game which the White won 14-7. Head coach Jim Carlen said neither quarterback will be ready to play this fall. I Carlen again will rely on Bass and Swinehardt whn hart knoo surgery last fall, to lead Carolina's offense. Carlen thinks both players will benefit from the offensive change. "We're just having Swinehardt and Bass drop straight back H flSy&gBmM^BHt m < m^M ' m tkMfeSSS^^Bsr^ \ ^Hf.'r;-:>!: . | I f ayMWC Littly ^L ^JSHr,. yL^ABR^ypPr V<> twKM gfir jj ick pass 1 because we feel like they can throw better from that direction," Carlen said. Running backs Spencer Clark and Casper Carter gained 82 and 74 yards, respectively. Clark ran seven yards for one of the White's touchdowns while the Garnet's Carter set up Gresham's touchdown with a 61-yard run. Zion McKinney scored the winning touchdown for the White on a 70yard pass from Feltz. ALTHOUGH HE thinks the offensive line needs bigger players, Carlen said the pass protection has improved. The goals that we've set, we've reached," he said. "I'm not saying we're the team wp shnnlH Kn? we've improved." Fligg did not think the offensive line's play Friday was an indication of the line's improvement this spring. "We didn't do as well as I'd like to," he said. "I hope we can improve. At times during the rpring, we had done better than we did tonight." Defensively, USC lost five starters, including Bill Currier, last season's Most Valuable Player. Carlen thinks the weakest defensive area is linebacker.
