Steve Keeler
Steve Keeler's philosophy of
student government is "spend
a little money and get as much
as possible." He says he has
not been happy with how the
money has been spent in the
past and would strive for

ucuci niictiiciai control.
Keeler said he is not
spending more than (50 on his
campaign and that this is an
example of how to cut down on
waste. "SG can be worthwhile,"
he said, "if the
1 money that belongs to the
students is spent more wisely,
and if the needs of the students
are responded to more effectively."

roundtables," Keeler
described roundtables as
being discussion groups.
"Aside from public speaking,
the president should meet the
students and see what they're
concerned about," he said.
"SG is still small enough to
have a referendum concept
and an open telephone line.
The president should be
available anytime to take care
oi problems," Keeler said.
Keeler supports at least a
partial closing of Green
Street. "Rome wasn't built in
a day, and saying the issue is
dead is quitting," he said. A
possible proposal for Green
Green Street would be to close
it from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. so
"students could get around
campus without worrying
about traffic.

"Most students think that
the student government is a
joke and that senate is a
Mickey Mouse Club," Doug
Kotti, a rising senior political
science major who is rnnning
for president, says.
Kotti, who has been in the
senate for a vear. said that if
elected he would try to provide
for more student input into
student government. "It is
unfortunate that students
don't try to communicate with
SG.
It is supposed to be a means
for students to expresstheir
ideas and complaints, and SG
is supposed to lobby for the
students to get things done for
them."
To provide for more student
input, Kotti plans to hold
periodic open meetings between
students and government
leaders for them to
exchange ideas.
Kotti's program for a more
\ effective student government
includes setting up a theft and
damage-insurance plan for
the residence halls and
maintaining a summer storage
warehouse for the resident's
belongings during the summer.
"Most universities that I
know have some sort of
arrangements for the summer,

Denise Painter j
Denise Painter sees the SG
vie-president as having "one
ii? i
iuui hi uie legislative Drancn
and one foot in the administration."
She thinks the
SG vice-president should
serve as a liaison between the
two. "All I can do as vicepresident
is to open the lines of
communication more," she
said.
Painter also wants to open
the lines of communication
between SG and the student
body. She said she wants to
take "positive steps to make
students feel like they are a
part of SG."
"Presently, we have a very
bad image," Painter said
referring to SG. "The students
set SG as an elitist group they

don't care that much and if
students had more input," this
might be changed, she said.
"Senators and officers should
talk to students, and students
should come to the office and
talk."
Painter said she doesn't
want to go in and change SG.
She wants to "nut it hark
where it should be. If we're not
united, we'll never get
anything through to the administration,
they can dismiss
us more easily if we're
fragmented," she said.
As vice-president, she would
work for "cooperation and
communication," within the
SG and with the students.
