Candidates walk around, well-dressed, wearing nametags and hearty grins. They shake your hand. Their voices serious, they ask you for your support in the student government election. Campaigning is predictable. Equally predictable is the ludicrous atmosphere surrounding the election. The precedent for this dates at least from the 1975 election, when the voting came to a halt at about noon because of a lengthy list of irregularities, not the least of which was the ommission of a candidate's name from the ballot. The trend continued in 1976. Although no technical mistakes were made, less than 10 per cent of the eligible electorate showed up to vote. Again absurdity cropped up this year. The election was postponed from April 4 to April 7. This year, too.
