Computer
disk ruined
by broken
equipment
By CHRIS DEESE
Gamecock Staff Writer
A computer disk worth $300 was
ruined Feb. 26 when one of the air
conditioning units in Lecontel
College's computer center broke,
Carter Bays, associate professor of
computer science, said.
"The disk drive will be out of
commission for a week and a half,
until we can get a new one," Bays
said.
A bearing in one of the air conditioners
burned out, and the
equipment that should have shut
off the computer disk drive failed
to work. "These things are very
sensitive to temperature changesmore
sensitive than humans, he
said.
Bill Linder, assistant chairman
of the math and computer science
department, said there are two
window air conditioners that run
constantly (except during extremely
cold weather) in addition
to the built-in cooling system,
which was not running during the
record high temperatures of that

normally kept at a lower temperature
than the other rooms in
the building.
Linder said that even though the
computer system, housed in a
converted classroom, is "fairly up
to date," the building is old and
hard to cool properly.
"I don't hold any individual
responsible, it was just a combination
of very unfortunate circumstances.
liiere are usually
people around up there (fourth
floor), but you probably wouldn't
notice that anything was wrong,
even if you were there at just the
right time," said Bays.He said he
thought it was discovered Monday
bv a Student whn hoarH ?
"squealing noise" from one of the
machines.
"Most of the vital information
was recovered," said Bays.
He said a few research programs
were on the disk, as well as some
professors' grade reports and
students' programs. "A large
amount of those (student
programs) may have been lost,"
he said, "but I haven't heard any
students say they lost anything."
He said graduate students who had
important work on the disk were
able to recover all of it.
After some tinkering , Bays said,
the system support crew was able
to get the damaged disk running
for a few hours, "which was long
enough for nearly everyone to
transfer their programs onto a
'floppy disk.'"
A floppy disk, he said, is a very
flexible plastic disk about the size
of a 45 record that can hold works
up to the size of a small book.
TTiese types of disks are temporary,
he said.
