Election
coverage
requested
To the Editor:
I am writing to ask you that
the upcoming SG elections be
given sufficient coverage by
The Gamecock. I seriously
hope that your coverage of the
election will include profiles on
each of the candidates for each
of the offices.
Last spring, the honorable
Frank DeLoache, editor of the
Gamecock at that time,
refused to include profiles. He
said he thought it was a waste

Gamecock's responsibility to
provide information on the
candidates. Otherwise, most
students will have no perspective
on which to base their
vote. And if a candidate tries to

promises no one could possibly

body shall decide if a candidate's
platform is unper

Because* the SG has done
nothing for the student body
(they've become a self-serving
organization), I am concerned
about candidates who are
presently serving in some
capacity of the SG. If a candidate
can speak of previous
experience in the SG as one of
his qualifications, then the
student body will be interested
to know if that candidate has
tried to do anything for the
student body or if he spent his
time serving himself. It is up to
The Gamecock to find out

I say we need better

in the SG. It seems to me that
new blood is desperately
needed.

In reference to the article
"Fuel conservation efforts

like to add some pertinent

bit of advanced planning in
years past would have averted
the tragic energy situation we
have now due to the short
supply of fossil fuels. As a boy
in grade school in the early 60's
I saw a film short at a movie
theater. It cautioned about the

natural resources from the
earth without returning
anything and that someday we
would run out. So it is clear
that we have been receiving
warnings for some time.
It is clear that fossil fuels are
on the way out. We need to
support more programs that
research other means of
energy production. One such
program is taking place at the
USC Deparment of
Engineering under Dr. Faust.
Funded by a government
contract, that program is
developing cheaper, more
efficient solar cells.

hurt by
increase
To the Editor:
In the Mar. 3 issue of The
Gamecock were two articles
which will hurt the wallets.
While it is understandable the
reasoning made by the
proposers, they failed to go
deep enough to ascertain all
the facts.
The proposal to help the
energy crunch by ending the
fall semester on Dec. 16 and to
begin the spring semester on
Jan. 19 will cause a loss of
monetary support for students
attending USC with veterans'
benefits. Under current
regulations we cannot have a
break of more than 30 days.
Inflation is a concern of USC
