Closed circuit television
cameras are now being installed in
the campus book store and will be
in operation Friday.
"We installed the cameras in the
new bookstore because the floor
area is more than two times that of
the old bookstore," said Douglas
Fitzgerald of the Operational
Services and Maintenance Center.

we ve nau me pians 10 install the
cameras for several years, but we
decided to wait until the new
bookstore opened."
"The average loss due to thefts
are about two to three per cent of
the store's gross revenues," Ben
Swanson, bookstore manager said.
"One of the reasons for the high
rate of stealing is because there is
not an adequate number of people
who are well-trained. The closed
circuit television will serve as a
seeing eye and this can replace the
inadequate number of people."
The televisions will not only be

employes working in the back, the
shipping area, receiving areas,
and the bookdrops, where thefts
might also take place. Swanson
said, "The investment of the
televisions will eventually save the
store money. It is one of the most
direct ways to stop stealing."
The financing for the cameras
comes from provisions in the
bookstore budget.
TWELVE CAMERAS will be set
up in the book store and will be
monitored in the manager's office.
The cameras' locations have not
yet been established. Other
changes in the bookstore will include
placing fiction books on
lower, more visible shelves.
"The main reason the cameras
will be used is to act as a deterrent
rather than to actually catch

customer, if you know you are
being watched, the chances are
good that the person will not want
to chance getting caught."
Fitzgerald said, "Not many
students are caught shoplifting
now and the ones that are caught
we can't prove . Things that are
easily concealed are the things ,
most often stolen, however, we lose r 'A
more money on books than en, < /
anything else." 1 jw
