THREE OTHER former union
members agree with Blakely that
staff domination was a real *
problem. Niles Reese, secretary of
the union until he resigned fall
1976, said, "The staff congregated
among the staff and figured out
decisions to hand down to the officers,
including me."

squelched disagreement by
dismissing any discussion of staff
domination. A typical response,
White said, was, "This is neither

Emmy Ross, who resigned as
chairman of the Cinematic Arts
Committee in fall 1976, mentioned
to "psychological and very subtle"
pressure to agree with the staff.
She said the committee members
didn't realize the discouragement
some chairmen felt because most
of them only came to their
respective committee meetings.
Blakely, Reese, and Irvi said
they were dissatisfied with the
direction the Union was taking. In
his resignation letter to Cagan,

office, the union was a major
concern , of mine. However, it is
undergoing drastic change. The
union I joined two years ago (1974)
is a very different organization
today. I am disenchanted by the
entire direction in which the union
seems to be inevitably going."

staff separate from executive
council meetings was another

attempt to influence underlings.
The idea had been raised of letting
the nine committee chairmen have
a separate meeting themselves.
Laatsch said, "No one's ever
said this separate meeting was

meeting. It's an additional time
committment."
Irvin said many union changes
were a result of Laatsch's influence.
He said that Laatsch has
tried to make the Union more
businesslike. Staff members, he
said, often do the work formerly
done by student volunteers.
Irvin said, "It's worse this year
than it's ever been because of her
(Laatsch's) relationship with Lisa.
We used to be able to stifle her
policies."
LAATSCH AND Cagan,
however, maintain that officers
and staff have little or no influence
over committee work.

Some union committee chairmen
said they were aware that some,
people felt pressure from the staff
but that they were not personally
affected by it.
"I don't see dominance because
I', not afraid to talk to the staff.
Some other people might be intimidated
by staff," said Taylor.
Ed McCall, -Ideas and Issues
committee chairman, said of the
staff and officers of the union,
"They get along good with me

say they pressure at times. But
(it's because) they have a genuine

"I never felt pressure," said

committee during the fall
semester. "I don't agree with a lot

CAGAN SAID she often agreed
with the staff and that they didn't
try to manipulate the officers.
"There has been, a change in
direction as there is any year with
new officers. Eddy Blakely and
Niles Reese were old-regime
people who didn't like the new
people's attitudes and physical
changes."
t^aaiscn said the staff felt they
needed to stress the union concept
because of the expansion of the
Russell House building, to let
students understand the total
implications of a union.
The union concept emphasizes
that a member should work as a
part of the total union, not just as a
member of one committee.
She said the staff "realized they
