Comparisons of the family behavior before and
after the study are now being evaluated. At the
close of the program, the parents filled out a
short questionnaire designed to evaluate the
sessions. Some of the variables being evaluated
are the child's behavior in the school, the child's
self-esteem, family interaction patterns and the
parents' marital relationship. j

Value of English 101 J
discredited by survey
w
A plurality of English 101 students said the course has not improved
their writing skills, according to a Gamecock survey.
Of the students polled, 78 per cent said they were taking or had taken
English 101. Of these 47.7 per cent said English 101 had not improved
their writing skills, 43.7 said it had, and 8.7 per cent either had no
opinion
The Gamecock was able to contact 364 of more than 600 randomlyselected
full- and part-time students at USC. They were asked, "Are you
taking or have you ever taken English 101?", and students answering
affirmatively were asked, "Did English 101 improve your writing
skills?"
English 101 is a composition course taught by English Department
faculty members and graduate assistants and required of all USC
students. Students who score at least 610 on the verbal skills of the
Scholastic Aptitude Test are exempted from the course.
THE DIFFERENCE between male and female students saying ;
English 101 did not improve writing skills was small (48.9 per cent of
malp students 46 R ner cent of female students), but female students
said the course had improved writing skills more frequently than male
students did (47.5 per cent compared to 39.4 per cent).
Among departments and colleges represented by at least 15 students
in the survey, business administration students responded most
negatively (58.1 per cent) and nursing students most positively (52 per {
cent) to the question of improvement of writing skills. More students
enrolled in journalism, engineering, and education said English 101 did
I not imnnwp writine skills, while those in government and international
L studies said it had improved their skills. J
