At that time, my 10-year-old Dodge Pnlora cnnnnmKorf tn nnlH uioathor nr cnmo JL V/lUt U OUV^VUIUMVU VV WVTAVA TfVUUIVI V* UVI1IV other ailment and stopped dead at the stop sign at this corner. As I was unable to revive it, I opened the hood of my car in hopes that some understanding soul would come to my assistance. To my glee, two campus policemen in a sedan slowly approached, turned their heads to look and slowly drove away. I was dumbfounded. There was no way that they could not have seen me and comprehended that I needed aid as I was standing in the middle of the road frantically waving my hands, screaming obscenities as well as having my car hood raised, the symbol of distress on the road?or so I had thought. With some difficulty I was able to push my car in neutral down the hill into a parking place. Quite upset, I walked to the campus police station and had a verbal battle with a desk sergeant about the hazards that my disabled car had posed to passing cars that r 1 (L ACADEMIC FORWAHI) PLANNING AMOCO O \F Peter Popejoy ^ Mike Griffin ATHLETIC ADVISORY A Mike Sutton V Harry Alford AMOCO OU / Joo McCulloch A CURRICULA &NEW COURSES AMOCOOLH y Bill Bricklo 7 John Butler V HONORARY DEGREES 7 Mark Hopkins \F Carolyn Dickman X SCHOLASTIC STAN'I)IN(i A PETITIONS Mark Pills \ Danny Martin y Glen McCoy \ HACHKLOIt OF CKNKRAL STUDIES %| Kamon Franklin l fL CAltd \ STUDKNT AFFAIRS %J Colleen Parry 7 Joe Walker y# Cinny Freeman \ Frampton Toole Fatty I-aurens 7 Katon Dawson Hill Killer f STIJDKNT FACULTY KKI.ATIONS \# JudyCherney \ Doug Kotti w I.isaCogan 7 Tracy Salisbury (# Dihhie Shealv & y ACADEMIC KESPONSIBll-ITY I# Tom Cooney X Wayne Stanley AJ Mark Hopkins LB ARe aippiaj6- i &ET thousands oruETWK WfKTS OUT FDP~ FRom tiuie KlDS RSKlWfr FC rflws'. noeRCH^wrs .357 /ymmum bazookas A fmBCLLS' AS *PNAStf$ TW rteflLLY k)0W. ^iruS fJLLS -MEIR T STILL mflNta?Lj& KCET n !ed to aid could easily have smashed into my Dodge's backside, as well as its blocking traffic at an important intersection and the fact that his cohorts had seen me and ignored my predicament. Instead of an apology, which would have satisfied my anger, the policeman gave me rebuttals as to why they did not need to stop and assist me. They included: 1. The policemen might have been on their way to a "stake out"; 2. The campus police were busy people and with the basketball game that night, they may not have had time to stop (?); 3. Even though they should have stopped to investigate because the breakdown had occurred within their iurisdiction (his confession), it was not absolutely necessary because car breakdowns happen all the time. They are a low priority. In essence, my breakdown was a low priority item that the busy campus policemen didn't have time to rectify. Well, then what are campus police for? What if I had had someone in the car that needed medical assistance? Wasn't my car breakdown considered a hazard to other drivers by being Student Me University C< 1976 19 UTSTANDINGTEACHER (Prof.) Jonathan Bryan San Agnew Phillip Cictzen Michelle C'rout TSTANDING TEACHER (Regional I Hilly Rhodcn STANDING TEACHER (Grad Asst > Niles Reece David Wheeler KACII.1TIK.S AND GROUNDS Colleen Parry AWARDS Everett Wilkie Robert Barr Frank Hamilton Terence Dolak HORSESHOE A1)V ISORY COMMI1 CAEE 1'ERIA Everett Wilkie Kate McAlarney Sharon Rodders Gloria Tolbert MAINTENANCE & BEAU1 iEICA Judy Cherney Mike East Diane Dowling j^lm Koreman UNA SCHOLARS VISITATION PARKING Joe Walker Pamela Carlton Cynthia Younians Rodney Sprott Janis Kruger COI.ISKUM ADVISOKY Huh Knudsen Kimhcrly Cliff Hrenda Kodgcrs Hrenda Malison Uuiru* Milliner < (H'NSKI.ING SKKVICKS Yoursahnda Grant Al Killeri DKUG William David Hilton lampv Itnnnfl Mai Holland Virginia Kddy 5 JO mo Ho-HO-HO-Hum. One ffirl had stonned and said she had almost run into the back of my car because she hadn't seen me until she was right on top of my trunk. What about a potential traffic jam? The two policemen that passed me (and make no mistake about it, they saw me) may have been on their way to answer another call for assistance, but if they were they were sure taking their time about getting there. Even if they couldn't stop, why couldn't they had radioed in and have someone else help me? I'm not writing this to accuse all campus policemen of being incompetent and arrogant; just these three. But if more of the campus policemen adhere to the lack of concern, diplomacy, and irresponsibility that these men possess, then USC is indeed an insecure place to study and reside in. I have alwavs thought that the motto of all policemen was to "serve and protect". Maybe this slogan pertains only to professional policemen. If it is done often enough, people, without really having studied the matter, begin to believe it and agree with it. Look at the impact the '4I FOUND IT" campaign enjoys. The sad part is that a writer for The Gamecock has mastered such a plnrton anH cindlp hanHoHlv O luguil UUVI uaai^iv iuvviij repeated it to maybe 10,000 people. Birch Bayh commends you. As to the body of the "Stop State Killing" article, it appears that your esteemed author has chosen to play word games. He (she or it) writes "A definition of deterence must be established, wnyf if capital punishment is re-instated and enforced, one of two things will occur: A) people will not commit crimes punishable by death out of fear of death or b) people who insist on playing with their lives and ours too, will no longer be able to play with ours anymore. In those terms, law abiding people will be protected whether criminals choose to be deterred or not. *.TY7?VV V l\nu, L>/\nEi/IU engineering freshman WOMEN'S STUDIES (# CHARIXJTTE STILL X B<-th Barr> tl John Kosler.
