Redshirting is probably the most
misunderstood word in football,
according to USC head football
coach Jim Carlen.
Most people think redshirting
refers to the year a player is kept
out of play. But, redshirting is
really the fifth year of playing
eligibility.
PLAYERS MAY be kept out for a
year because of injury, adjustment
to a new position or not being good
enough to play that year.
"But sitting out a year is no
guarantee of a fifth year of play,"
Carlen said. "The player must
\ want to return, and he must be
good enough to benefit the team by
an extra season of play. This is the

Redshirting has its advantages.
It enables a player to adjust to a
new position so he can help the
team more in his fifth year. "I'd
rather play them a lot in their fifth
year than very little in their
isopnomore year, * uarien said, "it

Carlen said redshirting does not

Although a player usually sits
out his sophomore year, he may be
kept out any ye^r?sophomore,
junior or even senior. The player
remains on full scholarship and
practices with the team.
This year Stevie Stephens was
the only redshirt. In other words,
he was playing out his fifth year of
eligibility.
However, 10 players did not play
this year. On the defensive team, ,
W.T. Williams and Howard Barrett
did not play because of injuries.
Steve Bernish, Larry Frierson and
Mike Bolden did not play because
Carlen thought they could benefit
from a year of learning.
ON THE offensive team, Gary
Hassen, Rick Payne and Fred
David spent the season adjusting to
new positions. Mike Williams did
not play because of two shoulder
operations.

year think redshirting has advantages.
From a nlavino
point, the extra year has allowed
them to mature and improve.
From an academic standpoint, it
has allowed them more time for
individual course work.
Sophomore Jay Feltz made the
travel squad as a freshman and
served as reserve quarterback and
placekicker. Feltz, who sat out this
year, approves of redshirting. "I
like redshirting because it gives a
player the chance to grow
stronger, develop and become
more mature," Feltz said.
Sophmore Mike Bolden was on
varsity last season but didn't get a
xeiter. tie aia not play this year
because his position was changed
from running back to defensive
back, and Carlen decided Bolden
needed time to make the adjustment.
Bolden has mixed feelings about
redshirting. "At first it was very
frustrating because I felt ready to
play this year," Bolden said. "But
I realize now that it will pay off in
the long run, in playing and in
academics."

USC boxers

Two members of Carolina's
Boxing Club won their divisions at
the First Annual Collegiate Boxing
Invitational on Nov. 22 in New
York.
Clark Hare defeated Temple
University's Tom King in (he 132pound
weight class and Billy
McNulty won the 147-pound
division over Brett Tromposch

tournament for injured Robbie

Easterns Champion who lost in a
split decision (two of three judges)
at Nationals last year.
USC'S HEAD COACH Chris
Hitopoulos said Hare and McNulty
performed better than boxers from
the 10 schools participating at
Manhattan's Downtown Athletic
Club.
"Clark did great," Hitopoulos

"Billy's a real hard worker and
when he's in the ring, he lets you
know he's in there," Hitopoulos
said. "He reallv gets with the

Both boxers said they were
happy with their wins. "It was real
surprising because it was only my
second fight," Hare said.
"We've got good talent, good
boys who are producing,"
Hitopoulos said about the team.
"The team looks good, got a lot of

"BOXING IS coming into its
own, like it was 15 years ago,"
Hitopoulos said. "It's a clean sport.
We don't let the guys get hurt. It's
controlled."
He said there are a lot of safety
measures taken to protect the
boxer. Along with head gear and
other protective devices, if a boxer
is stunned, the referee stops the
fight for an eight-secono count. "If
the referee feels the shock has
worn off, the fight's continued; but
if he's too stunned, they stop the
fight. We want them to participate,
not get hurt."
