V The Gamecock 1 Opinion r I ?.? ? , Ban organic The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is considering a proposal to ^ ban use of the words "natural" and "organic" in food advertising. Officials are concerned that advertisements using such words confuse consumers because company definitions of health and nutritional claims vary. Consumer groups such as Consumers Union want federally approved, standard definitions of the terms. Advertisers say the FTC should not be il. . 1 ^ I * ? * ' in me uusmess 01 Danning words, mey also say that consumers have become familiar enough with the terms to know what they are buying. The proposal would ban use of the terms "natural" and "naturally grown, "organic ana "organically grown" from all advertising except labels and in-store displays. # While it is not an advertiser's job to educate the public on nutrition, misleading the public by failing to mention the lack of nutritional value in a food is not sound advertising practice. A case in point is the Quaker Oats Company, maker of "Quaker 100 per cent natural cereal." The company does not state that their product provides no additional nutrition. The only difference between it and any other cereal is that it is minimally processed without preservatives or coloring, according to the company's vice president for research and development. A Instead of using "natural" the proposal would allow companies to say the food does not contain artificial or synthetic preservatives, ingredients, flavor or colors. In place of "organic" thev could sav thp food was grown without use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or artificial conditioners. Many individuals, according to a report given by a research foundation executive, believe that government regulations of such advertising are already in^ effect. Charles E. Swanson from California siate university said, "Consumers do not understand that food energy refers to calories and that a food's promotion of energy or vigor comes from its calories." He added that the terms energy, natural energy or food energy "enhance the positive or favorable meanings associated 0 with a food so that it will take on such characteristics as healthy and nourishing." Claims that a food supplies energy, health or alertness should be accompanied by a statement of the number of calories and an explanation that energy is supplied by calories.
