"Working under Carlen is hard to beat," Fligg said. "He shows a great deal of interest in me and my family." ALTHOUGH FLIGG has enjoyed his coaching career under Carlen ne is interested in someday being a head coach. "To say that I would never accept a head coaching job would be inaccurate," he said. In 1964 Fligg met Carlen while they both were coaching at Georgia Tech. They coached two seasons together before Carlen left to become head coach at West Virginia. Fligg immediately joined Carlen and within four vwrc Wocf Virginia had developed one of the more competitive independent teams in their region. In 1969 West Virginia defeated USC, 14-3, in the Peach Bowl. Carlen then went to Texas Tech and Fligg went with him. In the four years at Texas Tech the Red Raiders went to three bowls.
