None of the big schools wanted
David Prezioso when he was
playing high school football. They
thought he was too small to play.
But Prezioso wasn't convinced,
and after playing a year at little
Presbyterian College, he tried out
at Carolina?all 5-10, 206 pounds of
him.
Prezioso got his chance to Dlav -
when defensive tackle Kerry
Depasquale broke his ankle in last
year's N.C. State game, and he
hasn't left the lineup since then. In
fact, this year Prezioso has been
one of the mainstays at linebacker
for a much-improved Carolina
defense.
"I was considered too small to.
play major college football,"
Prezioso said. Playing middle
guard and tackle for Spring Valley
High School, Prezioso was selected
10 Aii-Area ana Ail-state teams his
senior year but received no
scholarship offers.
The junior linebacker leads the
Gamecock defensive unit with 56
tackles after four games. In addition
to being USC's number one
tackier, Prezioso leads the team in
tackles for losses with five and has I
caused three opponents' fumbles. '
"My size helps me sometimes,"
said Prezioso. "I know I have to do
the little things better and hustle,
and not miss tackles. I'm not too
big so I can't overpower players,"
he said.
"My father played football here
back in '49, '50 and '51 so I was
always interested in it," said
Prezioso. Prezioso started playing

"We know each other better and
we're playing as a unit."
Head coach Jim Carlen and his
staff selected Prezioso as one of the
outstanding defensive players in
the Georgia game last Saturday.
Prezioso had 12 individual tackles
and one assist in that game. USC's
defense forced four Georgia
fumbles and held the Bulldogs to
seven points in the first half.
"All the abuse we (USC's
defense) got last year is helping us
this year," said Prezioso. "We
want to prove ourselves to
everybody else," he said.
"We have a lot of freshmen that
are capable of stepping in at any
time," said Prezioso. "It makes
the rest of us play better because of
the pressure," he said. He thinks
this year's defense has the depth it
lacked last year.
Prezioso believes Baylor will be
ready for the Gamecocks this
Saturday. "They think we kind of
ruined their season last year," he
said. Carolina defeated Baylor 2413
last fall, a week after the Bears
played to a 10-10 tie with Michigan.
