Dave Wilsford, SG president,
criticized USC Board of Trustees'
policy of excluding him from
closed board meetings.
Wilsford brought up this
criticism at an informal discussion
on his ex-officio status at the
Student-Trustee Liaison Committee
meeting Friday.
By state law, the University
Board of Trustees may allow the
president of the student body to sit
in and offer suggestions to open
meetings of the Board.
For the past few years this
privilege has been irregularly used
by student body presidents.
Wilsford wants to use the privilege
to its fullest.
Wilsford thinks it necessary for
the Board to clarify his status. His

The university's change to a new
switchboard system in order to
save money and improve service is
causing some students problems.
Katrina Chandler, a staff
mpmhpr of rarfin sffltinn WI.TR in
the Coliseum, said the information
line "has been a problem since the
beginning of the semester."
The university and state switchboard
systems combined June

communications manager, said
savings will be $25,000 this year
and $35,000 every year after this.
Chandler and other students
have been complaining about the
reluctance of the operators to give
out a telephone number until they
ask if the caller has a campus
telephone directory. If he does, the
operator instructs him to use it; if
not, she asks why he does not have

There are many meetings to
which he is not invited. Wilson said
closed meetings could create a
feeling of secrecy between the
Board and the students.
BOARD SECRETARY George
Curry took issue with Wilsford,
saying the Board had discussed
Wilsford's membership at their
June meeting.
Curry said it was then decided
that Wilsford had the right to attend
all meetings except those
dealing with personnel and contract
matters.
He further oointed out that hp
had sent Wilsford a copy of the

which the Board had stated their

insists, she then gives him the

The semi-public places on
campus, such as the WLTR
newsroom, have a special problem
of directories disappearing. When
a telephone number is needed, the
campus operator may have to be
called. The caller then must go
through a series of explanations
before he gets the number.
The switchboard operators have
about 100 state agencies to service
besides USC, according to Ralph
Hutchinson, ouerator sunervisor
The lines must be operated 24
hours a day.
The 14 operators are instructed
to refer students to the directories,
said Hutchinson. "We are not
trying to be hard to get along
