It is known that high levels of intraocular pressure - pressure within the eye - causes glaucoma and other eye diseases. Previous research by the college has proven that strenuous exercise reduces eye pressure. Dr. Roger Sargent, assistant dean of the College of Health and Physical Education, said the present research is "to find out whether you can take a physically unfit person with a high-normal intraocular pressure through a sixmonth regimen of exercise and reduce the eye pressure. "We want to determine whether physical fitness can be used as a way of contributing to the prevention of glaucoma." THE FIRST THING the researchers must do is to locate 60 volunteers with high to normal eye pressure levels. After the group has been located, its members will be started on individually prescribed exercise programs which they will go through three times a week for a six-month period. Exercises will be done at the HSr nhucifal oHllrtoflnn " ~ ~4 (/..juivui vuuv.auuil tCIIlCl SU that progress in physical fitness and reduction in eye pressure may be monitored. WHEN THE PROJECT is finished in June, the eye pressure levels of the exercise group will be compared with those of a nonexercise group to see whether there is a difference in their levels of intraocular pressure. Sargent said the money would be enough to com plete the year-long project. Working on the research with Sargent are Dr. Jeffery Magun, a Columbia optometrist, and Dr. Steven Blair, director of the human performance laboratory in the College of Health and Physical Education. In the Sept. 9 issue of the Gamecock it was reported that chairmen for the Surgery and Pediatrics departments of the USC Medical j School have been selected. These positions have in fact not been filled. It was also incorrectly printed that the school is funded by the state with j a supplementary leaerai grant of $807,000. Actually the school is funded by a Veterans Administration grant of about $25 million over a seven-year period. The figure of $807,000 represents the school's t state funding for 1976-77. The Gamecock regrets the error.
