President William K. Patterson will retire
June 30, 1977, the university Board of
Trustees learned Saturday.
After Patterson's announcement, the
board elected a three-man committee to

board expects to name a new chief executive
by April 1.
Patterson, 63, who became president in
July 1974 after Dr. Thomas F. Jones
resigned to take a post at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, had served as the
university's top academic administrator
since 1961.

indications he would step down early.
