USC's baseball team has opened
fall practice.
New coach June Raines, who
succeeds congressional hopeful
Bobby Richardson, said USC will
field a young and inexperienced
squad when the season begins in
late February.
"We'll have a young club and
will have to replace three-fourths
of our infield," Raines said.
Steve King returns at first base
but departed are outfielder Steve
Cook, catcher Greg Keatley, pitcher
Tim Lewis, and infielders Jeff
Grantz, Jim Fleming, and Jim
Pantovitis.
THERE ARE 65 candidates, 40
are walk-ons, working out.

"It's impossible to work with this
many people, so we'll test their
arms, their speed, take infield,
batting practice, and play intrasquad
games and from that
we'll decide if they can make our
club are not," Raines said.
"Unless you are a power hitter,
there are two things I feel you have
to do in order to play ball and that's
run and throw," Raines said.
A KEY FACTOR in Carolina's
success will be the pitching staff."
The pitching staff is our main
concern right now," he said.
"We expect good things from
Jim Lewis," Raines said. "He's a
fine pitcher with good control.
Lynch (Ed), Hutchins (Hal) and
McLean (Chuck) are back. There
are a couple of other guys for us to
have a good staff have to do the
job."
