Registration | by computer successful By CARL STRANGE Asst. News Editor Computer Assisted Registration (CAR), the paperworker's dream University officials discussed for years before approving it in 1975, is being praised by students and administrators after its first use. The System, developed in 1968 by the University of Tennessee and expanded by the six Universities of California, was adapted to USC's needs by the Registrar's Office and the computer center, Registrar Robert L. Gunter said. "We scheduled 15,040 students in April," Gunter said. "Scheduling was completed in June. The beautiful part of the system is that % per cent of the students got exactly what classes they wanted with no trouble at all." Gunter said a disadvantage of the CAR is that "students just can't mal/o un Viotw ? ? uunv up uicu iniiiua duuieumes. Many of them decide over the summer to change a course, but this can only be expected, and because we know ahead of time what the demand is for certain courses we can move the faculty to sections the students need." Gunter said CAR also helps students who must work through Labor Day. "Under the old svstern." he said. Bt?irU?n*a missed many of the courses they wanted because they had to register late. "Advisement comes up in October, and we hope to have a drop-add period before students go home for Christmas. This will solve some schedule change problems," | - ??
