Title IX is supposed to mean
equality in sports for men and
women and although it has until
July 21, 1978 to be fully implemented,
it does seem that the
money allotted to women's sports
could be a little better than the

The unequal and unrealistic ratio
of men's and women's sports
budgets leaves no room for com
parison of the two programs. The
men scream that they need the
money and deserve the money
since they bring all the money in;
however, how can the women

do not have the money to build

unfair that the men's recruiting
budget for football is $ 56,746
more than the total women's sports
budget.
It seems that the University is
"copping out" with regard to the
need for greater financial support
to the women's program. It is true
that the football team has cut back
in the number of scholarships that
can be given. How dreadful to be

Perhaps a workable solution would
be to give scholarships to the kind
of athletes that would guarantee
regular gate profits. After all,
there are only twenty-two possible
positions--with ninety-five
scholarships how can they complain
of an "economic crunch"?
It is to this same "crunch" that
Bo Hagen attributes the fact that
the entire women's scholarship
program aids a lesser number of
women than there are men on
baseball scholarships. While the

University to Justify their unwillingness
to really advance their
women's programs. As long as
they continue in this unwillingness,
the program will virtually
stagnate-as long as it stagnates
the University will be able to
pseudo-justify their lack of
financial support.. J
Something which may not have !
been considered are the regressive
qualities inherent in this financial j
stringency. It seems that the major i

In the article, "Title IX~Women
athletes getting funds slowly," it
was implied that women on
scholarships receive full tuition,
fees, and room and board-this is
untrue. They only receive tuition
and fees and in some cases this is ;
for only one semester.
The article also states that
women's scholarships have been
offered at this University since
1972, but this is false. Women's
scholarships have only come into ,
' existence at this University for the
falTfetcnester of 1975.
