Infirmary policy
could cost lives
A few weeks ago Brad Wehler, while working in the
University Union Print Shop, was knocked to the floor by an
electric shock from a faulty light switch. Wehler already had
high blood pressure and asthma. But when print shop employes
called the USC health center for help, they were told that health

scene to describe the person's condition before a doctor could
leave the center.
Health center business manager Woody Carothers told The
Gamecock the policy is justified because an injured person
needs to get to the hospital and emergencies would disrupt the
infirmary patient flow.
But what good can a hospital do if a patient dies because of
inadequate emergency aid? The ambulance for Wehler didn't
arrive for at least 30 minutes. Emereencv does not mean a
W
patient needs help when he or she gets to the hospital. An
emergency must be dealt with immediately.
And just what do the officlas at the health center expect an
emergency to do but interrupt patient flow? They don't happen
very often, but when they do patients that can wait need to wait.
They'll still be in the waiting room when the emergency has
been dealt with. The person in need of emergency care may not
be if aid is not DromDt.
This university policy speaks for the judgement and priorities
used by university officials-particularly health center officials.
Dr. James Campbell, dean of Student Affairs, told The
Gamecock this policy was approved by his predecessor Charles
Witten. Campbell said President William Patterson may have
never seen the policy. The health center, for the budget it is
given, provides many services at a low cost to students. And for
this Dr. Isao Hirata, center director, should be commended. But
the total disregard shown for emergency health care for
students and staff is outrageous.
Media show bias
against Carter
The Boys on the Bus are at it again. Apparently the press has
learned little since the 1972 presidential campaign. Anyone who

The latest example is typical of the treatment Carter has been
receiving. Several weeks ago much attention was paid to
Carter's remark concerning ethnic purity while he was explaining
his position on housing. Carter said that while he favors
the right of any person to live wherever they choose, he would
not use the power of the federal government to break up a
neighborhood's ethnic composition.
The ethnic purity remark was splashed across the front pages
of most of the country's daily newspapers and aired on all three
television networks. In addition to Carter's slip of the tongue
being blown out of proportion, the media has not treated other
Democratic candidates in the same manner they have treated
Carter.
While interviewed on "Meet the Press," Sen. Henry "Scoop"
Jackson said homosexuals were "sick" and needed help. Were
these ill-chosen words smeared across the top of the New York
Times the following morning? No.
Speaking of the Times, an interesting article cropped up in the
April 16 issue. The article stated that Rep. Morris K. Udall
shared Carter's position in regards to housing policy, however,
instead of being played on page one, the article was buried on
page 24. Udall has said essentially the same thing as Carter, but

To the Editor:
Another April 15 has come and

million Americans were hit with an
income tax penalty of up to 20 per
cent because they happen to be
single (including many who are
widowed, divorced, students,
military, etc.) To end this tax ripoff,
Rep. Edward Koch, D-NY, has
introduced HR 850 in the House
Ways and Means Committee, to
establish the tax table currently
used by married persons filing
joint returns as the tax table to be
used by ALL taxpayers. This bill
would ALSO remove tax inequities
from married couples who both
work.
