The alley between Preston and
Woodrow dormitories that has
emptied traffic into the Russell
House crosswalk since spring
break will be closed by Saturday,
according to Harold Brunton, USC
vice president tor operations.
The Coker Life entrance was a
two-way entrance and exit, but
speeding cars made the narrow
drive dangerous so the Preston
alley was opened to act as an exit.
This was done during spring break.
When students returned they found
cars emptying out of the parking
area into the crosswalk in front of
Russell House.
At a March 24 meeting of
university and student government
representatives, it was decided
that pedestrian satety needed to
be considered first."

USC's main campus will use
Computer Assisted Registration
(CAR) beginning this fall.
Advisement, April 5-30. is fall
registration and not preregistration
as in the past three
years. During this time, students
will receive normal advisement
and fill out schedule reauest forms
The CAR system is modeled
after the University of Tennessee's
system and is used to great effectiveness
at 43 other colleges and
universities, according to T.
Luther Gunter, director of
registration.

Df most students, the system also
produces a demand analysis of
courses which can be used by
department aeans to determine
requirements and students needs.
Departments will get an idea of
how many sections are needed for
each course.
Students may request at their
dean's office free time in their
schedules, and the computer will
try to provide it. Gunter said.
Students who register early have
the best chance of getting what
they want.
The first group of schedule
requests will be computed in April.
Names will be sorted
alphabetically and rotated in five
groups to make it as fair as
possible, Gunter said.
Handicapped students get top
priority. For information they
should contact the Special
Programs Development Center.
Gunter named five problems in
starting the new system:
- The student who will not par
ticipate;
--The student who will not show
up in the fall:
-The student who makes F's:
--The student who changes his

"These problems are basically
with you under any registration,
but they are more pronounced in
pre-registration." Gunter said
In mid-July schedules will be

Registered students who receive
full schedules need to pay their
fees in advance and return to
campus by Sept 7 when classes
resume.
Students desiring to drop or add
courses will be able to do so on a
"priority drop-add' day scheduled
for Sept 2.
A general registration will he
