?With the departure of Earl Bass,
Grefi Ward and Rav I.avian#* frnm
last year's pitching staff Bobby
Richardson hopes new pitching
recruits can help USC continue its
success in college baseball.
Although Richardson signed
athletes at other positions he
emphasized his recruiting around
pitching prospects.
Only senior left-hander Tim
Lewis returns from last year's
starting rotation that combined to
give USC one of the top earned run
averages in the country.
JIM LEWIS, a transfpr frnm
Miami Dade Downtown Junior;
College, in Miami, Fla. is presently
number two in the team's four man
pitching rotation. He relieved Tim
Lewis Saturday against the Baptist
College and was not too im1

pressive. Lewis came in with the
score 13-3. His pitching, combined
with several substitutes' mental
mistakes, enabled the Baptist
College to score six runs in the
game's last three innings.
At' Miami Dade Lewis had a
career record of 16-7 and a era of
1.97. He had a career strikeout
record of 209 in 217 innings.
EXPECTED TO follow the Lewis
names in the rotation is freshman
Hal Hutchens, who passed up a

Junior College. A native of
Columbia, Kemrey played high
school baseball at CardinalNewman.
Several walk-ons survived preseason
drills and will be available
if needed. Among pitchers to make
the team are Columbia natives,
Bill Allen, who played at A.C.
Flora, and Ronnie Crapps from
Brookland-Cayce. Mike Kish from
Boyertown, Pa., is another right
hander who liopes to be called
upon during the season.
AFTER USC'S 13-9 win against
the Baptist College Saturday
Richardson said he was pleased
with his starters, including the
pitching of Tim Lewis. After the

team's "B" squad.
"I think 1 can help the team out if
I work on my batting a lot,"
Rizzuto said. "I'm a pretty good
fielder, and I have a pretty good
arm."
SECOND BASEMAN Tom Mixon
is realistic about his chances of
playing his freshman year. He is
playing behind Mark Van Bever,
the College World Series alltournament
choice at secontPbase.
i "As far as helping the team out, I
don't see too much I can do, except
maybe on defense," Mixon said.
"I'm not ready to hit like some of
these guys are right now as a
freshman. But, defensively, I
might help them out in the late
innings some."
Richard Ness, son of circuit
court judge Julius Ness, will be the
team's third catcher. He is not
expected to play a great deal this
season with Greg Keatley ex1
perienced behind the plate.
Jim Insana is another freshman
- catcher who must wait his chance
' to prove himself. Insana is from
