PUTT-PUTT AND THE BOARD
vs. THE PETEH PRINCIPLE
In view of recent rumors and
happenings about the USC campus,
this writer has felt the urge to
respond with a somewhat fictional,
though satirical assessment of a
situation .
The climate is an informal one;
two individuals sitting around a
table, drinking from a pitcher of
beer. One is a roving reporterwriter;
the other, a man somewhat
defeated, not dismayed, as
evidenced by a recent statement,
"The system works." This person

successful endeavor you maintain
that the 'system' works? I must
admit that I'm somewhat perplexed

shed some light on the matter."
"Of course, my boy, nothing
would please me more. It may help
if I present you with a little lesson
in history ... an account of my
experiences within the 'system'

impressive. There you were . . .

seemed to have been reluctant."
"You might say that, my boy.
However, I considered it an opportunity
to climb up the ladder, so
to speak; and 1 knew that if I
persisted, someday I would make
it to the top deck of the ol' Carolina.
And sure enough, I began my climb

up to navigator. This was quite an
experience; Captain Jones was
quite a man, in his own way . . .
However, when he moved on and I
was handed the helm, by the Board
of Trusty Overseers, I figured they
were looking for a man with a
settled disposition who would run a

As you may remember, after I
had settled in things began to

consider my experience as captain
a rewarding one . . . Yet to this
day, I keep asking myself if this is
the type of work I'm cut out for
As the reporter was excusing
himself and preparing to leave, the
ol' captain exclaimed, "If you
can't beat 'em, you join 'em." And
with that statement, he handed the
reporter a piece of paper, on which
