Penology
program
Instituted
By CATHERINE THRIFT
Gamecock Staff Writer
A new department at the
University of South Carolina.
created this fall, offers both an
introduction to and graduate study
in the field of criminal justice.
The introductory level, intended
as a. starting point for those in..
terested. in criminology or
penology, is a two-year progi-am
offering an associate of science
degree (A.S.).
THE HOLDER of the A.S. could
continue, through the College of
General Studies. to the bac
calaureate degree.
The School of Criminal Justice
also offers a masters degree, not
limited to those who have finished
the two-year course.
William J. Mathias, of the
graduate division, said the
program was designed to .foster
careers in six basic areas.
"The sub-units of criminal
justice are law enforcement, court
services, corrections, juvenile
services, criminal justice planning
and criminal justice %ducation,':
he said.
The educational field would be
geared to those who wish to teach
at the junior college or technical
center level, Mathias said.
MANY OF the areas can be
further sub-divided for
specialization, such as probation or
parole in the area of corrections.
The graduate program requires
36 credit hours, with an 18-hour
major including four core courses.
The core courses, Mathias said.
could be individualized to meet the
needs of the student.
A specialized field of six hours is
also required in courses such as
personnel, budgeting, public policy
or computographic mapping.
"Of course, many standard
courses. such as foreign
languages, could qualify also." he
said.
"TIIE NEW department is
designed to serve students who are
coming out of undergraduate
school who have never worked in
their life. as well as older peopie
who have been in criminal justice
for years." he said.
Although the school does not now
offer a four-year degree. the
possibility of expanding criminal
justice to a baccalaureate program
does exist.
