Suggestions, gripes
now being accepted
at health center
By CATHERINE THRIFT
Gameetck Staff Writer
Students can now register complaints concerning health services
and facilities on suggestion forms that have been placed in the Student
Health Center.
The new system of receiving complaints was set up by the Health
Advisory Committee. Any student may fill out the forms
anonymously.
,"THIS IS one way we thought we could hear from the students," said
Al Menard, committee chairman. "It was decided on late last year,
but is just now being implemented."
All suggestion forms will be forwarded to the committee for ap
propriate action and Menard said that the forms should be as specific
as possible.
"If we're going to take action, we need specific reasons," he said.
Menard said the forms will ask that students report what particular
services they received, but the complaint itself can involve any aspect
of the center.
TH E FORMS do not require the student's name, but anyone wishing
a reply from the committee should sign the complaint.
'The forms are not the only way to communicate with us, though.
Anyone can send letters directly to me or the committee," said
Menard. Correspondence to Menard should be addressed to him at the
office of residence life on campus.
The committee, which meets approximately once every three
weeks, is made up of two members from Student Affairs, four faculty
members, from nursing, pharmacy, psychology and health education,
one member from the Counseling Bureau, one from Health Services,
and three students appointed by the Student Government.
Two of the three student members must be majoring in nursing and
pharmacy.
The new suggestion forms are being intiroduced to help the com
mittee meet the requirement that it "consider and investigate com
plaints regarding health services."
Other functions of the committee include keeping under continuing
review policies and plans for the university health services and
making appropriate recommendations to the Vice President for
Student Affairs and the Director of the Health Service.
TI CKETS From Page One
"I am in favor of a Clemson graduate, for example, not being put into
the same category as.a USC graduate," Booco said. There is a problem
of having such a large graduate enrollment, with many of the tickets
goiog to the graduate line. "I would like to see graduates from other
schools relegated to their proper position," Booco continued.
THE NEW system may be difficult to enforce by the athletic depart
ment and SGA, Booco said, "but basically I like the idea of what they
are trying to do."
This ticket distribution plan can be considered to be a seniority
system. "he seniority system is good, but it must be kept simple or we
lose sight of what we are trying to do. We must make it as perfect as
possible," Booco said.
A student's status is listed on a computer print-out sheet, which is not
always accurate. "Tis puts the athletic department in a bad position
because the printout is the ultimate thing we use to determine status,"
Booco said.
"We only get a computer readout at the first of each semester and
sometimes these don't include such things as summer school hours or
transfer hours. It is difficult to determine how many hours will tran
sfer, Booen said.
"I know that coach (Jim) Carlen is basically in favor of such a system
as this. He thought the present system was very unfair to the un
dergraduate students," Booco added.
Johnny Housley, of the Senate Athletic Committee said, "I really like
this bill and sincerely think it's fair. This system would be based on the
number of semester's activity fees paid. From what I understand coach
Carlen likes it, too.
"I WORK at the tables where we stamp fee receipt and we have a
book with the number of hours a student has, as listed by the computer
printout. I don't think it will be any problem since the print-out will just
have to be changed to state the number of attempted hours at USC,"
Houisley said.
"People who are transfers from another school, and graduate and law
students from other schools won't like this system," Housley added.
This resolution was proposed by Student Sen. Rene Spires and was
passed with a considerable margin at the Oct.15 meeting.
Under the new system, students would still enter the coliseum at the
time specified by their I.D. number. However, fee receipts would be
stamped to show the number of attempted hours instead of class rank.
STW'DENT-FEE receipts would be stamped according to the
following classification: Freshmen 0-29 hours attempted, Sophomore
30-59 hours attempted, Junior 0U hours attempted, Senior 90-119 hours
attempted, and graduate more than 129 hours.
Law and graduate students would be admitted to the coliseum on a
first-come, first-meved basis, regardless of their ID number. However,
Sthe attempted-hours system would still'apniy to them.
