CARLEN AND his quarterback
both talked about the LSU defense
that stopped USC's scoring
machine Saturday night.
"I said before tonight's game
that LSU would be the toughest
team on defense that we will have
played and they certainly proved
it," Carlen said. "I would rather
credit LSU's ability rather than
our inability on the outcome of the
game."
Grantz also had nothing but
compliments for the LSU defense.

It had to be a pleasing win for
McClendon, who is being pressured
by a lot of LSU supporters to resign
after a slow 2-4 start this season.
Before the game a sign hung from
the stadium reading "Pack Mac"
referring to getting rid of Mc
Clendon who, before the game had
a career record at LSU of 104-41-6.
McCLENDON'S 105th win came
Saturday night. "Some good
things are starting to happen for us
now," he said. "It was a'very good
victory. I believe injuries have
pulled us together as a team."
Grantz was asked if the loss at
the hands of LU will hurt USC for

eat, losing to Clemson.

Loud chordses of encouragement

NIGHTLY
Times demanding
for swim team
By SALLY WILSON
Gamecock Sports Writer
"It's a target to shoot at," said USC swimming
coach Alan Gentry about the new Division I
qualifying times for the NCAA Championships in
March. Chairman of the NCAA Swimming
Committee, Charles Butt, said that, "the 1976
swimming and diving standards are the most
demanding ever."
According to a recent NCAA publication,
"There will be a maximum field of 40 par
ticipants for each of the 16 swimming events.
Any swimmer who meets the first, more
demanding, automatic qualifying time will be
assured of entry into the Championships, March
24 to 27, at Brown University. A second (con
sideration) time also will be used. A swimmer
who meets this standard is then eligible for the
Championship, but will have to be among the
fastest or most consistent competitors to be
chosen, if the list of eligibles exceeds 40."
The new times are substantially faster than
last year's qualifying times. Gentry said he had
only one swimmer, Tom Schmidt, who had ever
swum that fast. "They're not unreachable.
Times get faster each year--it's all relative."
He said that the NCAA came up with
"magnificent times," and that only the good
athletes are going to make the standards. "It
cuts out the free ride," Gentry said, as costs of
sending students to various competitions are
putting more strain on the athletic budget.
Another new entry procedure is the proof of
performance. "Proof of performance will be
required for.swimming and diving entry into the
Division I meet and the committee has
established three ways to verify proof of .per
formance ... The meet referee must sign the
"POP" card, the copy of official results or the
copy of official scorebook before it will be ac
cepted for verification."
Since the first week of school, the USC
swimming team has been practicing five mor
nings a week and several afternoons. By next
week, the team will be going full speed, with long
courses in the morning and regulation length
short courses in the afternoon.
This spring, USC will host the National In
dependents Tournament at the new natorium in
the Solomon Blatt Physical Education Center.
Gentry feels the team is in a good position to win
the championships this year. Along with this are
the NCAA Championships in March and then the
Olympic Trials in June.
