Got a heavy date planned with that special chick or
guy in your life? You know, one of those soft lights
and warm words affairs. Well if you need some
background music (but you are not going to be
listening to it closely) then may I suggest an album
entitled, simply "Lucy Simon".
THE SIMON name is not exactly unknown to music
fans. When you hear it, though, probably you think of
Carly, or possibly Joanna, her sister. But if you can
remember the 1960's, then you may remember that
Carly and Joanna have another sister-Lucy.
Once she was a fairly successful and steady per
former. But five years ago she began raising her
family a job that took a higher priority than music.
For a while, she was content with her sole occupation
of motherhood. Her situation is different now. "I
love being a mother, but music is in my blood and I
won't feel satisfied in my life without an outlet for it,"(
she says.
Lucy Simon (the album) is her comeback attempt.
It would be pretentious to call this a great album,
because it is not. Of course, some people are going to
like it and it should make a fair showing on the charts.
But I can't help thinking that only the teeny-bopper
set is going to go. for it. It's just that kind of music
high school romance stuff. Don't take me wrong,
there is a place for that type of music. But by the
time you have listened to the album, the songs seem
to run together. The subjects of the songs vary, but

the presentation of each is similar. Listening to the
album is like trying to read a Rod McKuen book;
after a while it begins to get to you.
OF THE ten songs on the album, Simon wrote
seven of them-. The lyrics take the form of poetic
ballads. Most.of them are simply narratives of past
experiences. Some of them are pretty good, but her
problem is that she- tells of something that has
already happened to her instead of making it happen
to the listener. The listener feels left out as if wat
ching a historical movie instead of experiencing it
with a singer.
Simon does have a pretty voice. All of her
melodies, though, are written in the same-area of the
scale-high. As a result, her songs sound like some
she would sing to her children. Also, there are a lot of
"la-la's" on the album that don't do much for those of
us who have finished grammar school.
The album had a couple of good songs, though. The
second version of From Time To Time To Time ends
the album. It is a little different from all the rest and
by the time you get to the end of the album it comes as
a pleasant surprise. She also does (who doesn't) an
arrangement of All I Have To Do Is Dream that is
more suited for her voice than some of the others.
I hope Lucy is not attempting to get on equal terms
withCarlybecause she can't. They are not even in the
same class. When she was pregn with her first
child, Lucy recorded an album of '-ldren's songs. .
After the hearing of this albuni.itsens that that is
the best course for her.
