Senate bill asks
change in textbook
ordering policies

The USC Student Senate passed a resolution Wednesday -asking
faculty members to try a different policy in ordering textbooks from
campus bookstores.
The new policy would require the faculty to give notice of a change in
textbooks for 100 to 200 level courses at least one semester in advance.
The faculty would also be required to select books in accordance with
students' needs to re-sell them at the end of a semester and to list the
length of time a textbook will be used at each bookstore.
THE RESOLUTION will be sent to the Faculty Senate.
"We need to give the student a break," Sen. Mike Griffin said. "The
faculty doesn't know how much these books cost. They get them free in
the mail." He said students should know if they will be able to resell
their books.
In other action, the senate defeated a bill that would abolish devotions
before senate meetings.
Sen. Bruce Carter said he investigated the constitutionality of
devotions for legislative bodies. The United States Supreme Court has
not ruled on the question, he said. Because of this, he said he did not
believe devotions for legislative bodies were unconstitutional.
SEN. MIKE Griffin said because of his Catholic beliefs he opposed the
devotions.
Speaking for devotions, Sen. Danny Sansbury said, "I think all the
help we can get from upstairs is needed."
The senate passed a resolution asking USC President William H.
Patterson to reinstate the shuttle bus system. The senate cited an even
worse parking situation because of construction around camnpus as a
need for the system.
The senate passed a revised election bill. The bill eliminates the
elected position of Student Government Association secretary. Con
tributions from individuals to political campaigns are limited to $20 in
the bill.
A bill proposed by Sen. Randy Stevens requesting money to install
SGA suggestion boxes was passed by the senate. Boxes will be placed in
15 campus buildings.
