ILL 9 P.M. FRI. NITES RMS AVALAIBLE USC -German Club begins film series By DUNCAN MANSFIELD 3amecock Staff Writer The USC German Club is sponsoring a classic German film series to be shown at 2 p.m. each Tuesday at the Russell House Theater. The rilms are free to all students and faculty. Brad Wehler, German Club president, said the series is intended to give students an "afternoon film diversion." The films will be "easily accessible to most students," he added. "We (the German Club) hope that the series will give people a knowledge of the culture of the German-speaking nations," Wehler said. The five-film series opened last week with a presentation of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. If the series is successful this semester, the German club will sponsor a 12-film series next semester. The series schedule for this semester is as follows: Oct. 28 The Blue Angel (1930), Josef von Sternberg's second sound film, is considered his best. It is a Circe story of a bewitching lady, the night club singer, Lola Lola (Marlene Dietrich) who steadily turns an orderly, almost lifeless school teacher (Emil Jannings) into a beast and a buffoon: Nov. 4 Vampyr (1931) directed by Carl Dreyer. A young man tries to rid his region of a vampire who has taken the form of an old woman in one of the first horror classics of the sound era. Nov. 18 M (1931) directed by Fritz Lang. The film is part of Lang's distinguished adventure film series (including Doctor Mabuse and Spies) about the activities of gamblers, murderers and spies. Lang's use of asynchronous sound in M of echoing screams, the ironic use of a Grieg tune, heavy breathing and contrasting silence pervades the ambiance of this classic. Dec. 2 Threepenny Opera (1931) is G.W. Pabst's cinematic adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's masterful play about the street-life of a sleazy beggar's London. Brecht sued Pabst for corrupting his play, for changing his antiromantic, and anticonventional theme. Pabst turned the play into an ordinary boy-girl tale. But Pabst's version has merit in the director's excellent use of visual effects. All films will have English subtitles. COMPANY i, S.
